The History of The Ryder Cup
The Ryder Cup has become one of the world’s most eagerly anticipated sporting contests, a biennial showdown between the greatest golfers from Europe and the United States. Drama, tension, skill, camaraderie and sportsmanship are served in equal measure, captivating an audience of millions around the world. It’s an event that transcends sport, yet remains true to the spirit of its founder, Samuel Ryder.
Ryder was an English seed merchant and entrepreneur who made his money selling penny seed packets. He had taken up golf relatively late in life to improve his health, and was in the gallery for an unofficial match between Great Britain and the United States at the Wentworth Club in 1926.
Inspired by what he saw, he donated the now iconic trophy for the first official Ryder Cup match in 1927. For The 2014 Ryder Cup, all the attention of the world focused on the magnificent Gleneagles Hotel with the Jack Nicklaus-designed PGA Centenary Course.
The charm of Gleneagles is endless, with the lush panorama of the rich Perthshire straths framed by tall pines, beech and firs, silver birch and purple heather in a spectacular moorland setting dotted by burns and lochs. There has perhaps never been a more idyllic setting for such a historic event.
